MassArt’s
Animated Alumni Giving Appeal

General Background

Institutional Advancement:
Our job in the Institutional Advancement Office is to raise funds for the college to help with expenses that student tuition and fees don’t fully cover - from keeping up facilities, to hiring the best professors, to increasing student scholarship and travel opportunities. One of the ways we do this is by asking MassArt alumni to make an annual financial contribution to the college.

Creative Alumni Appeals:
As you can see from the attached clip from Colgate University, some colleges are coming up with clever ways to engage their alumni in giving and to remind them to pursue matching donations from the companies they work for to double their impact.

The Importance of Alumni Participation:
The rate at which alumni donate to their alma mater affects more than the college’s budget, it influences how the college is perceived by outsiders, from prospective students to prospective employers – and a high alumni participation rate improves our ability to earn grant money from foundations and affects how well the school is ranked.

After sending the “Donation Clonation” animation in an email blast to their alums, Colgate University reported an alumni giving rate of 32%. The alumni participation rate at MassArt is around 9%, and we would like to see that number improve.

Project Specific

MassArt Pride:
As a free standing state art school, MassArt occupies a truly unique place in the world of higher education in this country. We want to showcase to our alums the independent spirit, departmental competition and incredible creativity that is alive and thriving at MassArt, and there is no one better suited to capture and convey this than our current students.

Project Description:
Together with the Graphic Design Society, the Institutional Advancement Office would like to come up with a short, creative and compelling appeal to reach out to our alums, increase our alumni giving participation rates and encourage alums to double the impact of their donation by pursuing a matching gift from their employers.

Timeline:
We think this would be a great project to put out next spring, and know that everyone would take special pride in it being produced by MassArt students. We will be accepting project proposals between now and December 3rd with the goal of producing a two to three minute piece over the Winter Break.

Proposals:
Please send project proposals, including concept/theme, character list/descriptions and general content/dialogue to Elizabeth at elizabeth.audley@massart.edu by December 3rd, 2007. Please include a budget with your proposal and feel free to contact Elizabeth with any questions.

Budget:
Please submit a detailed budget along with your project proposal for evaluation by the Institutional Advancement Office.
